So what does finding your niche mean? Identifying a niche is about finding a distinct segment of consumer interest. It means finding that particular spot in the business world where you can stand out. For example, there may be hundreds of sites selling books, but how many specialize in books about your particular interest? If you try to sell books about several subjects, you may be competing with thousands of other sellers. But if you focus on selling books about your particular interest, you will drastically reduce the number of sites you will be competing with.
Now that you know what a niche is, how do you go about identifying yours? You can start by asking yourself a few important questions:

Take an inventory of all the things you know. Are you good at fixing cars? Can you decorate a room? Do your friends come to you when they have computer problems? Do you have good knowledge of a particular topic? Find what things you are good at, or have knowledge of and write them down. You may be surprised with the list you generate.

What things do you love doing? Would you do them whether there was a profit involved or not? The best place to start is looking at your hobbies. These are often the things you spend money on or time doing. Check if it's possible to make money with these very same things. Starting and growing small business can take a lot of time and effort, so if the business is about something you love doing, it will make the work a lot more bearable than if you were to build just any business.

After you jot down what you know and what your hobbies are, it's time to do some research to see if there is a market for any of them. Are there any supplies for your hobby that you have trouble finding? If so, it's likely that others are having the same difficulty. You could go into business to fulfill this need. Or maybe you love to decorate your home and get compliments from your friends and neighbors. These could be markets for which you already have the skills and interest to meet the needs.
Once you answer these questions and find the distinct area that will set your business apart from others, you have identified your niche and are ready to develop your home business.
